For Learner’s Permit Applicants Who Have Failed the DMV Knowledge Exam Three Times

If you’ve failed the Virginia DMV knowledge exam three times, the DMV requires you to complete either an 8-hour or 30-hour Driver’s Manual recertification course before you can attempt the test a fourth time.

This course is based on the Virginia Driver’s Manual and is designed to help you better understand the material and prepare for your next attempt at the DMV knowledge exam.

🕒 8-Hour vs. 30-Hour – What’s the Difference?

• 8-Hour Driver’s Manual Course

  • Designed only for recertifying students who need to retake the DMV knowledge exam.

  • Does not count toward any driver education or waiver requirements.

  • Applicants age 17 and under must provide proof of completing 36 periods of driver's ed (Driver’s Ed Certificate) to take this option.

• 30-Hour Driver’s Manual Course

  • Fulfills the same recertification requirement as the 8-hour course.

  • Also qualifies for the Adult Waiver program, which can allow adults 18+ to take the road test without the 60-day holding period.

  • Ideal for students who want to fulfill multiple requirements with one course.

• 30-Hour Driver’s Manual Course (Online) – $130

• 8-Hour Course:
  Take the final exam from home — as many times as needed. Once completed, we will email you an electronic certificate.

• 30-Hour Course:
  You will need to schedule your final exam. Upon successful completion, we will issue your certificate in person.
